New area code coming to 805

San Luis Obispo County may get new area code in June 2018

California PUC–The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will begin the process to establish a second area code due to available prefixes for the 805 area code expected to be used up by December 2018. The new area code is expected to be given to new customers asking for phone numbers after June 2018.

The area served by the 805 area code includes small portions of Monterey and Kern Counties and most of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. The 805 area code serves the cities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo County; Buellton, Carpinteria, Goleta, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Solvang in Santa Barbara County; Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Ventura in Ventura County.

The CPUC will hold three public hearings on the proposed area code change. They are scheduled for Aug. 22 in Oxnard and Santa Barbara, and 11 a.m. Aug. 23 at the San Luis Obispo City Council Chambers, 990 Palm St. in San Luis Obispo.

If you are unable to attend these meetings, you may submit written comments to the CPUC Public Advisor’s Office:

  • By postal mail to 320 W. 4th Street, Suite 500, Los Angeles, CA 90013, or
  • Via email to [email protected].
