On March 12, 2017, for the fourth straight year in a row, 11 members of the Templeton Fire and Emergency Services will be participating in the 26th annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This year they are climbing in memory of one of their own, Fire Captain Mike Erb, who lost his battle with kidney cancer this past summer.

Templeton Fire will also be climbing in honor of Fire Chaplin Richard Burch, Les Gillis and little Maddy Gonzalez (Team Maddy) and all others from our community who are fighting cancer.

About The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb

What began 25 years ago as a small, local fundraising event for the Washington/Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has evolved into one of the world’s most physically challenging competitions, attracting firefighters from all 50 states, Canada, Europe and the Pacific. Dressed in 50 pounds of “bunker gear” including helmet, fireproof coat and pants, breathing apparatus and air tanks used in fighting fires, these firefighters will climb the Columbia Center Tower’s 69 floors of stairs – that’s 788 feet of vertical elevation and 1,356 steps.

The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb has raised over $10 million dollars since its inception. Funds raised have helped develop new, more effective, less toxic treatments for patients with blood cancers. Since its founding in 1949, LLS has helped double, triple or even quadruple survival rates for some forms of blood cancer. Over 1 million Americans are currently battling a blood cancer and it’s the number three cause of cancer death, with leukemia alone causing more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.
