Missing person case now being investigated as a homicide

–Sheriff’s Detectives have located the remains of 38-year-old Jared Jay Walters, who was reported missing to the Atascadero Police Department on Feb. 26, 2016.

During the course of the investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives received information that the remains of Walters were located in the 4100 block of Stagecoach Canyon road in rural Santa Margarita. On March 6, 2018, the Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant at that location.

The warrant was served utilizing the Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail with assistance from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team.

This was a two-day operation in which Sheriff’s Detectives were assisted by the San Luis Obispo County DA’s Office, FBI Evidence Response Team, CHP Air Operations, San Luis Obispo Auto Theft Task Force and the Morro Bay Police Department.

During the search warrant, human remains were recovered from the property. The Department of Justice recently utilized DNA testing and confirmed the identity of the remains as Jared Walters. The missing person case is now being investigated as a homicide. Because the investigation is ongoing, no further details are available at this time.
