Hospice San Luis Obispo County announces October volunteer training
Volunteers will provide assistance to those coping with a life-limiting illness
Hospice of San Luis Obispo County (Hospice SLO County) is seeking community members to participate in a training program to become in-home volunteers. The training will equip participants to provide assistance to those coping with a life-limiting illness. The first of seven evening sessions begins Monday, Oct. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hospice SLO County, located at 1304 Pacific St. in San Luis Obispo.
Hospice SLO County offers unique opportunities for community members who are looking to make a difference in the lives of others. As an in-home volunteer, participants will provide companionship, respite care, transportation, practical assistance, emotional support and comfort to individuals who are coping with a life-limiting illness. Requirements include compassion, open-mindedness, a healthy perspective on grief and loss, sensitivity to others and a commitment of two to four hours per week.
This comprehensive training covers attitudes about dying and death; hospice and palliative care; physical and spiritual pain; communication; family and community dynamics; and emotional and physical aspects of dying and death. Participants will examine their own relationship with dying and death in preparation to support others who face a life-limiting illness, death or grief.
The training is a prerequisite for volunteering with Hospice SLO County’s In-Home Respite Care Program and End-of-Life Doula Program. Preregistration is required and space is limited. The training session spans five weeks and is on Mondays and select Thursdays: Oct. 2, 9, 12, 16, 23, 26 and 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hospice SLO County, located at 1304 Pacific St. To register or for more information visit the Hospice SLO County website or call (805) 544-2266.
Hospice of San Luis Obispo County (Hospice SLO County), a local, 501(c) 3 nonprofit, volunteer, non-medical hospice, has been providing county-wide in-home respite care, emotional support, practical assistance, and comfort to individuals who are experiencing the impact of a life-limiting illness for over 40 years. The organization also offers grief-counseling services, including individual, family and group counseling, to anyone grieving the death of a loved one. All Hospice SLO County services are provided at no charge and are supported through direct donations and fundraising events.
