The Leapfrog Group has awarded Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton with an “A” rating for patient safety.

Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton received the top grade from one of the nation’s leading patient safety advocacy organizations. The hospital received an “A” in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2014 Hospital Safety Score rating system.

“Receiving a fifth ‘A’ score in a row really emphasizes our commitment to providing safe, quality healthcare to our patients,” said Twin Cities Community Hospital CEO Mark Lisa. “We are committed to continually monitoring and improving the care we provide. Patient safety is the top focus for us–one that requires diligence with every patient, every day.”

Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said, “Hospitals like Twin Cities that earn an ‘A’ have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community by exhibiting excellence in our national database of patient safety measures. I congratulate Twin Cities Community Hospital for continuing to put a priority on the safety of its patients.”

About The Leapfrog Group
The Hospital Safety Score is an initiative of The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization using the collective leverage of large purchasers of health care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey allows purchasers to structure their contracts and purchasing to reward the highest performing hospitals. The Leapfrog Group was founded in November 2000 with support from the Business Roundtable and national funders and is now independently operated with support from its purchaser and other members.

Background on the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score
This year, The Leapfrog Group analyzed 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to calculate the hospital safety scores, including the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and certain measures from Hospital Compare and the AHA Annual Survey. The measures are not simply averaged to calculate the final score. Instead, Leapfrog says each measure is weighted on:

• Strength of evidence of the measure
• Opportunity for use of the measure
• Potential for the measure to impact the care for many patients

The weighted score for each hospital is then translated into a letter grade. More than 2,500 hospitals received scores in this most recent report; one-third received an “A” rating in the Hospital Safety Score.
