March a part of largest protest in American History

–Over 5,000 people braved rainy conditions in Downtown San Luis Obispo Saturday to be a part of the Women’s March, a global movement whose mission was to, “stand together in solidarity with our friends, families, and women everywhere, for the protection of women’s rights, human rights, safety and health; and to look forward to a positive future.”

Attendees Valerie and Emily Swales came in from Fresno to participate.

Held one day after the inauguration of President Trump, “This nationwide march will send a powerful message to our new administration, on their first day in office, that this is the first step towards unifying our nation’s diverse communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up,” according to their website.

Attendees Valerie and Emily Swales came in from Fresno, “They said that it was a women’s march and I am a very strong feminist,” said Emily. “The horror of yesterday made me want to come out today,” said Valerie.womens march slo

Allie Ryan from San Luis Obispo had a very simple answer as to why she chose to participate in the march, “Women’s rights,” she said.

The worldwide movement had an estimated 2.9 million participants in the US and will go down in the books as the biggest protest in American history. Protests were also held internationally, with large demonstrations taking place in Spain, France, Switzerland and even as far as Antartica.

The New York Times featured San Luis Obispo in their collection of images from marches worldwide.
