Submissions sought for Vineyard Dog Park Student Art Contest

Contest open to students in 6-12 grades

Students residing in North County have an opportunity to win a $300 cash prize, receive mentoring from a professional artist, and earn community service hours for submitting the winning design for the 5th annual Student Art Contest for Vineyard Dog Park.

The competition is open to students in 6th through 12th grades residing in North San Luis Obispo County. Under the supervision of a professional artist, the winner will transfer their design to the 4’ x 7’ outdoor mural at the entrance to Vineyard Dog Park in Templeton.

The outdoor mural is replaced each year with the winning entry selected by the Vineyard Dog Park Board of Directors.

The full-color mural should incorporate should include at least one of the following elements: dogs and their people in various activities, vineyards and hillsides, park amenities (trees, landscaping, Frisbees, tennis ball, swimming pool), native plants, or wildlife (butterflies, birds, deer, etc.)

“We’re looking for that special design that will make people smile when they come to the dog park. Many park visitors tell me that the student mural, whimsical fire hydrants, colorful flags, and spectacular scenery all combine to make Vineyard Dog Park a real gem” says Paula O’Farrell of the dog park board of directors. “We consider our entrance mural very important as it contributes to the first impression for new visitors to the park.”

The design must be an 8” x 14” original color drawing in pencil or marker. Any entry which has been reproduced from an existing photo, painting, graphic, advertisement or any other work produced by another person will not be accepted.

Contest entries may be mailed to Vineyard Dog Park, PO Box 1081, Templeton 93465 or hand delivered to Templeton Community Services District office located at 420 Crocker Street in downtown Templeton or the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce at 6904 El Camino Real. Entries may also be scanned and submitted by email to [email protected]. Students should contact their art instructor or local school district office to inquire about special collection dates that may be available for each school.

Designs must be received by June 24 and winners will be notified by July 1. A local artist with a professional studio in Templeton will supervise and assist the winner in completing the mural. The mural must be completed by September 15.

The winner will receive a $300 cash prize plus all art expenses paid at the completion of the project and awarded community service hours. An artist reception will be held at the public unveiling of the mural.

The 2014 winner of the competition was Savannah Reifers of Templeton who painted a whimsical mural of a dog and owner admiring the Sirius Canus Major (Dog Star) constellation. Previous winners include Annie Meeder, Tracy Garcia, Luke Taylor, and Emily Hurst.
