Caltrans accelerates repairs on U.S. Highway 101
–San Luis Obispo County Caltrans will re-pave more than 16 lane miles of U.S. Highway 101 from Vineyard Drive Overcrossing in the community of Templeton to North Paso Robles Overhead near the city of Paso Robles in northern San Luis Obispo County, due to funding by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
“US-101 is a very popular highway used by thousands of motorists everyday traveling to and from Californiaís Central Coast region,” said Caltrans Director Laurie Berman. “This project will repair the highway and provide commuters, tourists and locals with a smoother and safer commute.”
This section of US-101 is used by more than 70,000 vehicles per day, and more than 7,200 commercial trucks use the highway daily to transport their goods.
“Paso Robles and Templeton are known for its wineries and olive groves so the region sees a lot of trucks transporting agriculture products, which causes incredible wear and tear on the roadway,” said Caltrans District 5 Acting Director Richard Rosales. “In fact, there has been an increase of people using US-101 to visit the wineries, downtown Paso Robles and its small businesses so we are fortunate to have the funds from SB 1 to repair this deteriorating roadway before it becomes a safety hazard and the potholes begin to expand causing more costly damage to the highway.”
This $9 million pavement project has been awarded to Papich Construction of Arroyo Grande, California, who will fill potholes, repave the highway and construct Americans with Disabilities Act compliant ramps along US-101 in Templeton.
Work is scheduled to begin this week and overnight lane closures will occur Sunday night through Friday morning, from 8 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. Motorists are encourage to plan ahead, use alternative routes and Be Work Zone Alert.

SB 1 provides an ongoing funding increase of about $1.8 billion annually for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the state highway system. SB 1 funds will enable Caltrans to fix more than 17,000 lane miles of pavement, 500 bridges and 55,000 culverts by 2027.
