Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous wastes are common household items containing hazardous substances or toxic chemicals that pose a threat to human health, wildlife, and the environment. Examples include but are not limited to paints, cleaners, and hairsprays that come in aerosol cans; batteries, pesticides, etc. These must be disposed of at any Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Site.hazardous1
Aerosol spray cans (household cleaners, hairsprays):
a. Empty aerosol spray aerosol cans may be place in trash cans.
b. Partially-full spray aerosol cans should be dropped off at Household Hazardous Waste facilities.

Household batteries, fluorescent tubes, and fluorescent light bulbs:
a. “SLO Take Back Program” allows batteries, fluorescent tubes, and fluorescent light bulbs to be returned to retailers who will take these items back for free. Hewitt Hardware in Templeton takes all the listed items, while A-1 Liquor, Chevron station, TCSD, or Templeton Market and Deli accept batteries.
b. Household batteries, fluorescent tubes, and fluorescent light bulbs should be fully discharged. Lithium batteries should have tape placed on the metal contacts. Fluorescent tubes and fluorescent bulbs should not be broken and should be carefully placed in collection containers.

Medicine:
a. Take advantage of medicine take-back programs. Templeton’s Sheriff Patrol Station (located at 356 N. Main St) has a drop-box next to the main entrance. They accept over-the-counter medications, prescription medication, medication samples, medication for household pets, and medicated lotions or ointments.

Paint:
a. All retail stores in SLO County take back unwanted or leftover paint at no cost.
b. All paint products can be dropped off at Chicago Grade Landfill (located at Homestead Road, Atascadero) on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They accept 15 gallons per trip/free. You may also use any other designated Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Sites.
